Michu's Spain call-up has pushed his asking price past £30m, warn Swansea

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins has warned any clubs interested in Michu that his call up for Spain has driven the price to more than £30million.

Michael Laudrup indicated that he believed Michu was worth £30million last December, barely four months into the forward’s incredible debut season in the Barclays Premier League season following his £2.2m bargain move from Rayo Vallecano.

But Jenkins insisted yesterday that the 27-year-old’s selection for the World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Georgia has pushed the price up even higher for a player chosen ahead of Tottenham’s £26m strike Roberto Soldado.

Great Dane: Swansea boss Michael Laudrup claimed Michu was worth £30m last December

He told Sportsmail: ‘We’ve seen with Tottenham and Gareth Bale that every player has a price. We are not in that bracket with Tottenham but they sold a top player. We are realistic about that side of things.

‘I would say Michael was about right with his valuation of Michu if you look at the current market, but this call up enhances that further.

‘We know we have a very talented player and naturally we want to keep him.’

On form: Michu has scored five goals after a relatively slow start to the season

Michu, who has already racked up five goals this season, is contracted to Swansea until 2016 after signing an extension in January, a deal he agreed after seeking assurances from Michael Laudrup that the Dane intended to stay for at least this season.

Laudrup remained at the club despite an extremely turbulent summer, but his future beyond this season is unclear, with many well-placed sources at the club expecting him to pursue a fresh challenge after their current campaign is concluded. In turn, that could well affect Michu's long-term thinking as he enters his peak years.

It is understood that Liverpool and Arsenal continue to monitor his progress, though Jenkins insisted he has ‘never had a single phone call to express interest’ in the player.

Michu learned about his call up while travelling on the team bus back from Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Southampton. He said: ‘Every Spanish footballer dreams of this and it's so difficult. Few people can wear the shirt of the best team in the world.

‘Let's see if fortune is with me and I can play, although I'm already grateful to be called up. It's the maximum to which a footballer can aspire. The national team is the best in the world, it's a privilege. I'm enjoying it like a kid.’
